SEXUAL VIOLENCE
CRISIS CENTERS
THERE IS HELP IF YOU HAVE BEEN VICTIMIZED

Make sure you are safe. Call someone you trust to help you. Victim services are available 24 hours a day in all 67 counties in Pennsylvania. Hotline information for your local rape crisis center can be found on this page or by calling 1-888-772-PCAR. for national services please call: 1-800-656-HOPE.

Do not shower. Because evidence could remain on your body and clothes, avoid changing or washing. Eating, drinking, smoking, combing your hair, showering and urinating could also impact evidence collection. However, if you have already done any of these things, please don't hesitate to seek medical attention.

Seek medical attention. At the emergency room, healthcare providers can check for injuries that may not be visible and treat you for possible STDs. Hospital staff also may perform a sexual assault forensic examination to collect evidence and may provide medication to prevent pregnancy. An advocate from a local rape crisis center can accompany you during this process.

Report the assault to police. Consider notifying the police of the assault. In many communities specially-trained police and investigators will help you through the evidence collection and investigation process. Your local rape crisis center has legal advocates who can assist you during the legal process.

Seek counseling. The trauma of an assault can be overwhelming and you many experience a variety of emotions. Rape crisis centers can provide you with support.
ABOUT PCAR
The PA Coalition to Advance Respect (PCAR) works to eliminate all forms of sexual violence and to advocate for the rights and needs of victims of sexual assaults. PCAR works at the state and national levels to prevent sexual violence and to challenge public attitudes, raise public awareness, effect critical changes in public policy and responses to sexual violence.

Through a statewide network of 51 rape crisis centers serving all 67 counties in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the coalition helps to provide quality services to victims of sexual violence and creates public awareness and prevention education within local communities.

In 1999, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) awarded PCAR a five-year funding agreement to create the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, which opened on July 20, 2000. That funding was renewed in 2004 and again in 2009.
